Short Story, Big Picture: Do YOUR Job
One of my favorite movies, “Interstellar” has a quote that shaped how I look at what I do for my job, daily, to successfully complete my goals.
The quote is, “Don’t trust the right thing done for the wrong reason. The ‘why’ of a thing – that’s the foundation.”
Sometimes I switch the order of the words “Right” and “Wrong” just to confirm that the power will always rest in he ‘Why’.
Today’s Short Story is a piece to help you achieve your long-term goals, aka the Big Picture.
In our daily jobs, we are sometimes asked (or told by others) to look outside of what we are supposed to be doing. It’s a powerful tool to see and be a part of the whole picture, but focusing on being best at your tasks in the micro can have a huge impact on the macro.
Here are three things that might help you be better at your job:
Change doesn’t always mean better
How many times have you looked at your business and said, “We need to make a change.” While I am not saying ALL change is going to end badly, the idea must first be answered with “WHY” it needs to make these changes. Doing something just because it is a change, may not get you to your goal. Focus on what you are currently doing well, determine if the “Why” creates a stronger result, and then determine IF the effort of change is justified in the effect.
Double down on what you’re best at
So many times when we are trying to be better at something, we focus on what we did wrong, not what we did right. If you switch up to the process to start with what was done well and “Why” it worked well, then you can apply more effort to the positive outcomes and see more success. We all know that success breeds more success!
Small steps reach Impossible goals
Babies want to run, but that only comes after learning to take the first step. Same with business, if you focus on small steps that move you toward the larger goal, then you will see progress. Every time you get a small win you will feel the “Why” that drives you to keep pushing through until the next win happen. Before long, you will have successfully completed your main goal.
The “Why” is the foundation. Companies that have more than one person unify under the “Why” and depend on each person to complete their tasks to the best of their ability to successfully reach the company’s goals. The same idea applies to single entrepreneurs as well. You may wear many hats, but each one of those hats has a specific task that must be completed to the best of your ability to be successful.
Baby steps, you got this!
